Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Student Practicum
Speech and Language Pathology at the NIH Clinical Center affiliates with university graduate programs in Speech & Hearing Science and Communication Disorders to provide students with a clinical as well as a research-based practicum experience, consistent with the standards of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's Educational Standards Board. Interested applicants must be in an ASHA-certified master’s degree program. Consideration into program requires an application process.

Research Externship Program
Research externships are offered for students who wish to participate in research investigating various aspects of discourse processing as a function of prefrontal damage or the aging process. This program is "project-oriented," affording students an opportunity to learn skills in core research competencies. The project ends with a scientific presentation during Rehabilitation Medicine Grand Rounds or a scientific poster at a research meeting at NIH or an outside organization. Consideration into the program requires application, research writing sample and recommendations.

Workshops/ Observers/ Teaching
The staff regularly conducts observations for Clinical Center personnel, outside clinicians, science teachers and graduate and undergraduate students with an interest in the application of ultrasound and other non-invasive techniques to study swallowing, speech and language disorders. Staff members teach at local, national and international universities and colleges in the areas of dysphagia, developmental disorders, acquired language disorders, functional outcomes, and assessment. Continuing education is also available through Rehabilitation Medicine Grand Rounds.
