Upcoming Lecture:
Leading large NIH funded consortiums: (Lots of) Lessons learned from the 1st year of the Bridge2AI program.
Presented by Yael Bensoussan, MD
Tuesday, May 30 at 2 pm EST
The Bridge2AI program funded its firsts consortiums for data generation projects in 2022 with the goal of building large-scale multimodal databases that are ethically-sourced and AI-ready to fuel AI research. Gathering multi-disciplinary team science is not an easy task and many challenges in terms of social engineering need to be addressed and navigated to obtain tangible results. Dr. Bensoussan will share her experience in co-leading the Bridge2AI-Voice Consortium in its first year of funding and review “do's and don't’s” of Team Science.

Mission and Vision:
EUR/WLAR strives to counter under-representation in science, academics and research by fostering and empowering mentorship, role modeling, and career development by highlighting solutions at the interface of policy, industry, and academia. Through a united effort and enhanced awareness and inclusion, we can take our next step towards realizing and showcasing our greatest potential.
Lecture Series Description:
Invited monthly lecture series highlighting and honoring women and underrepresented leaders in science, industry, academics, policy and advocacy. Originally from a combined effort of Interventional Radiology, Biomedical Engineering, Radiology, Imaging Sciences, Data Science, and Image-Guided Oncology, the series aimed to honor and promote women and confront gender and other disparities within the fields.
This honorary lecture series uses experiential tales to challenge the implicit bias on role modeling and mentoring of underrepresented minorities. Monthly topics are open-ended and geared towards highlighting successful female or other under-represented leaders as role models for trainees. Speakers focus on mentoring, career building, implicit bias, inclusive team science, and empowerment to counter under-representation in science and medical research.
Logistics:
Monthly series, typically on the 3rd or 4th Tuesday of the month at 2 pm - 3 pm EST (14:00 - 15:00 EST) live with unlimited streaming via NIH VideoCast. Lectures are recorded, archived, and available online on a single Past Events page in the NIH VidoeCast.
Topics will be as diverse as our invited speakers, entirely of speaker’s choosing, but the goal is to relate the lecture topic back in some way to mentoring, benefits of inclusive team science, or demonstrations of exemplary challenges or successes in mentoring, or solutions for under-representation. Correlative vignettes or anecdotes highlight different pathways towards challenges and hurdles overcome, specific mentors or role models, implicit biases, decisions and barriers on pathways towards successful careers, which we honor with this “Grand Rounds” style honorary lecture.
Specific Topics for 2022 will expand beyond disciplines to include advocacy, policy, artificial intelligence in healthcare, ethics, panels, activism, mentorship, wellness, resilience, career pathways, and industry. 2021 topics included mentoring, gender disparity, Interventional Radiology, Data Science, Biomedical Engineering, Balancing work and home, Imaging Science, decision-making, team building, people behind the scientist, gender equity imperative, how to find mentors, what I had to overcame to become established, implicit bias, disciplinary biases as hurdles to team science, cultural humility, inclusive leadership, developing a career brand, the power of social media and sponsorship, early career transitional grants, faces behind data science, balancing work, family, teaching, clinic, and academic productivity…love what you do & do what you love.
History:
The series was initiated in late 2020 as an effort to acknowledge, educate, and address under-representation in role modeling for future stars within our small micro-community. Enthusiasm soon grew to include a broader audience: NIH Radiology & Imaging Sciences, SIR, WSIR, SIO, MICCAI, RSNA, CIRSE, NIH Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program, NIH Medical Research Scholars Program, NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health, NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education, Extramural Academic Institutions, NIH Institutes in the Intramural Research Program of the NIH, other sectors of NIH, NIH trainees and students, extramural guests, and a diverse set of stakeholders. The series initially called Women Leaders in Academic Research (WLAR) was renamed in 2022: Empowerment of Under-represented Researchers (EUR), and has been gifted with talented and engaging speakers who share a contagious enthusiasm for their work.
In 2022, the organizing committee appointed a Chairwoman, Jocelyne Rivera, D Phil candidate in the NIH-Oxford Cambridge Scholars Program and the NIH Center for Interventional Oncology.

Thanks in advance to speakers for shining light and being a part of the solution!
