About Us

The Translational Biobehavioral and Health Disparities Branch (TBHD) operates as part of the NIH Clinical Center intramural program, and its research mission is closely aligned to the NIH mission by providing a versatile clinical research environment to improve health, and by seeking fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce health disparities through clinical research and community based participatory research (CBPR).

In practical terms, this mission translates into a mandate to provide national leadership in the development of standards for clinical and community-based research, the development of innovative approaches for conducting research in clinical and community settings, as well as to support the general NIH research training mission by providing a setting and models for education and development of research staff at all points of career development.

Our research at the Clinical Center emphasizes health behaviors, quality of life, symptom management, and health disparities.

The TBHD is organized into the following sections and units:

  • Clinical Practice Innovation in Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Management Section
    • Biobehavioral and Integrated metagenOMics (BIOM) Unit
    • Biobehavioral Outcomes in Cancer and Caregiving (BOCC) Unit
    • Data Analytics and Translational Science (DATA) Unit
  • Dietary Behaviors and Biopsychosocial Health Section
