Elective Description
The NIH Critical Care Medicine Department's (CCMD) pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) translational research program invites second- and third-year internal medicine residents to a four or eight week clinical care and clinical research rotation at the NIH’s Clinical Center (CC). The CC is the site of intramural clinical research for the NIH. Each year patients from all over the world participate in over 1,500 research protocols conducted by the various institutes and centers.
The PAH service provides outpatient and inpatient care as well as consultative services to adult patients with PAH enrolled in intramural research protocols. The NIH CC has access to all currently available PAH therapies as well as cutting edge investigational treatments. The PAH service is staffed by senior physicians and fellows with expertise in critical care medicine, pulmonary diseases, cardiovascular diseases and infectious diseases. In addition to clinical management, the program has both a PAH natural history study and active interventional protocols. The Natural History protocol allows the team to study how the disease changes over time and investigate new ways for evaluating disease severity and progression. The interventional protocols involve phase 1 clinical trials of novel treatments.
Residents will be expected to be present Monday-Friday and be available to see patients with PAH under the supervision of the staff physicians. Residents are expected to be an integral part of the team. The resident will participate in evaluating and treating these patients and avail themselves of the outstanding electronic/library resources available at NIH to review existing literature pertinent to the clinical problems discussed. There is also a weekly Wednesday afternoon working meeting during which pertinent past and upcoming cases are reviewed. Residents are also welcome to attend the CCMD lecture series on clinical and research topics in critical care medicine held every Tuesday and Thursday (11:30-12:30pm).

- To become skilled in management and treatment of patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension.
- To develop skills to communicate medical information effectively to patients and their families, ancillary medical staff, and fellow physicians.
- To attain information about critical care medicine and pulmonary arterial hypertension training opportunities at NIH.
