Elective Description
One resident is selected at a time for a clinical rotation with the Liver Diseases Branch (LDB), National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), National Institutes of Health (NIH). During the four-week clinical rotation, under the supervision of clinical faculty, the resident will join the consultative and inpatient hepatology team along with participate in outpatient LDB clinics. As a member of the hepatology consultative service, residents will perform specialty consultations on both inpatients and outpatients with a wide variety of diseases participating in research protocols at the NIH Clinical Center. On the inpatient service, residents will participate in caring for patients with a diverse spectrum of liver diseases that are active participants in LDB clinical trials. During this rotation, residents will be exposed to hepatology specific procedures including percutaneous and transjugular liver biopsies, hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) measurements and vibration controlled transient elastography. Residents will also participate in various conferences during the week and will be responsible for presenting patients and clinical didactics with clinical hepatology fellows during weekly clinical hepatology rounds. Typical disorders seen include viral hepatitis B, C and D, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), noncirrhotic portal hypertension (NCPH), autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, drug induced liver injury (DILI) and hepatic graft-versus-host-disease (GVHD). As time permits, residents may be offered the opportunity to participate in ongoing research at the LDB. There is no required evening or weekend duty.
Elective Objectives
- Provide experience in the evaluation and management of acute and chronic liver diseases
- Gain exposure to both inpatient and outpatient clinical hepatology
- Develop an understanding of hepatology specific procedures
- Foster understanding of clinical research in liver disease
- Learn about the design and application of clinical research protocols aimed at advancing the field of liver diseases

Eligibility Requirements
Residents must be currently enrolled, and in good standing, in an Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited internal medicine program in the United States and a PGY-2 or 3 at the time of the elective rotation. Foreign medical school graduates, in addition to the above, must have ECFMG certification.
Selection of Applicants
One resident will be selected to participate in this rotation each month, with preference given to those with a stated interest in hepatology fellowship training or participation in clinical hepatology research.
Selected residents are required to have malpractice/liability coverage provided by their training program or sponsoring institution for the duration of the elective period.
All applicants will be expected to provide COVID-19 vaccination verification.
