Elective Description
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) offers a four-week clinical elective rotation in Addictions Medicine at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center, a state-of-the-art research hospital, located on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland.
Administratively, the resident will be assigned to the Office of the Clinical Director, NIAAA. They will work under the supervision of NIAAA clinical faculty, joining an inpatient multidisciplinary team including Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Social Worker, behavioral health Nurses, and several other disciplines to deliver medically monitored treatment for Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), other substance use disorders (SUDs), other psychiatric disorders, and their complications. Thereby, the Resident will contribute to clinical care and safety for research studies conducted by NIAAA and other NIH institutes at the Clinical Center. The elective will enable the Resident to experience all aspects of Addiction Medicine by caring for patients seeking to achieve and maintain sobriety, and to resolve or mitigate ongoing psychosocial, psychiatric, and medical deficits that sustain addiction. Under the guidance of an attending physician, they will also participate in the Addiction Medicine Consult Service and outpatient clinic, thus gaining exposure to a wider range and variety of patients, and to learn firsthand about research ongoing on them. Residents will also participate in various conferences during the week and will be responsible for presenting patients during weekly multidisciplinary rounds. There is no required evening or weekend duty.
Elective Objectives
- Provide experience in the evaluation and management of patients with AUD, other SUDs and frequently comorbid disorders.
- Foster understanding of clinical research in Addictions Medicine.
- Learn about the design and application of clinical research protocols aimed at advancing Addictions Medicine.
- Develop presentation skills and depth of knowledge by discussing patients at multidisciplinary rounds.
- Prepare case and journal club presentations.

Eligibility Requirements
Residents must be currently enrolled, and in good standing, in an Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited program in the United States (US) at the time of application for an elective rotation. A Program Letter of Agreement must be provided by the resident's program director. Foreign medical school graduates, in addition to the above, must have ECFMG certification.
Selection of Applicants
Applicants should indicate their goals for the rotation in their cover letter.
One resident will be selected to participate in this rotation each month.
Selected residents are required to have malpractice/liability coverage provided by their training program or sponsoring institution for the duration of the elective period.
