Overview
The Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Fellowship is a 3-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited program that provides a comprehensive training experience ideal for physicians who seek a broad education in both research and clinical endocrinology. At the NIH you have access to a training experience that is broad, highly specialized and offers a professional atmosphere that values one-on-one working relationships between fellows and supervising faculty, many of whom are world renowned experts in the field. The NIH provides an innovative and state-of-the art system designed for highly efficient and safe patient-centered care, creating an ideal setting for professional development in the field.
Program Structure
Year 1:
- NIH Clinical Center Rotation: 6 months total
- Georgetown University Hospital (GUH): 6 weeks
- Washington Hospital Center (WHC): 6 weeks
- Walter Reed National Military Medical Center: 4 weeks
- Washington DC Veterans Affairs (DCVA): 4 weeks
- Weekly continuity clinic at the NIH Clinical Center: 1 half day per week
- NIH Lipid Rotation: 4 weeks
- NIH Clinical Research Training in Endocrinology: 2 weeks
- NIH Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility: 2 weeks
Year 2:
- One-half day sessions of the weekly continuity clinic at the NIH Clinical Center
- One-half day session at the NIH Diabetes Clinic and one-half day session at the MobileMed/Suburban Hospital Community Clinic on the alternate week
- Consult service: 4-6 weeks per year, includes Blood Glucose Management Service (BGMS)
Year 3:
- Research
- Consult Service: 4-6 weeks per year
- Clinics: Weekly Continuity Clinic, Diabetes Clinic, and the MobileMed/Suburban Hospital Community Clinic, modified per needs of fellow

Application Information
Apply to this program through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). This program participants in the National Resident Matching program (NRMP). We accept medical residents who are board-eligible in internal medicine, and includes residents in the Clinical Investigator Pathway. The expected length of stay is three years, and for exceptional trainees this may be extended to a fourth or even fifth year. The application period ends November 30.
