What to Expect During Your Consultation

  • A physician or nurse practitioner from the Pain and Palliative Care Service (PPCS) will meet you and introduce the service.
  • The team member will sit down and talk to you about physical symptoms or emotional/spiritual issues that are causing you or your family distress.
    • Ex. Pain, nausea, trouble sleeping, anxiety, financial concerns, family stress
  • A focused exam may be performed to assess bothersome symptoms or pain.
  • After meeting you, the PPCS provider will discuss possible recommendations with your team and they may make changes based on what is appropriate for your care.
    • Recommendations could include:
      • Medications
      • Complementary therapies (ex. Reiki, massage, acupuncture, biofeedback)
      • Referrals: social work, pet therapy, art therapy, recreation therapy, massage therapy, acupuncture
  • While in the hospital, the PPCS is available to see you during the weekdays
  • As an outpatient, you can be seen in the clinic with frequency of visits based on your needs
