Clinical Electives Program: Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery

Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education

Rotation Director

Valerie Asher, MD

Rotation Description

The National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) offers a four-week elective program for a limited number of fourth-year medical students. The NIH Otolaryngology-Head and Neck elective program places an emphasis on the diagnosis and care of patients participating in research protocols in the outpatient and inpatient setting. Applicants should have completed at least one fully clinical OTO-HNS elective to introduce them to the fundamentals of the specialty. The NIH rotation should not take the place of a fourth year acting internship that allows the student planning a career in OTO-HNS to acquire the skills that are important in residency. Students in a 4-week session are expected to choose a subject for in-depth reading and literature review for presentation at the end of the rotation. Longer 12-week electives involving research may be possible but are limited to MD-PhD students and are contingent upon the acceptance of a senior staff mentor. Clinical exposure includes patient assessment and observation of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for patients participating in a variety of clinical protocols involving NIDCD investigators and their collaborators in other institutes. The student will have exposure to ongoing research involving patients with smell and taste disorders, neuro-otologic disorders, and patients with other pathologies of the head and neck. Students will attend a variety of meetings, including NIH Clinical Center Grand Rounds, NIDCD intramural research seminars, and section journal club meetings. Note: No more than two missed days of attendance for interviews or other purposes will be allowed and requests should be made prior to final acceptance.
