Fellowship Program Director: Van Kim Holden, MD at University of Maryland

NIH CC Site Program Director: Amisha Barochia, MBBS, MHS, ATSF

Overview
The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI)/University of Maryland Fellowship Program is an ACGME-accredited, 3-year combined training program in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, under the institutional sponsorship of the University of Maryland. This joint fellowship program is designed to prepare the next generation of physician-scientists for an academic career in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, with broad experience in the clinical arena as well as in basic science, translational and/or clinical research. The program is open to all physicians who are board-certified or board-eligible in internal medicine with a -strong interest in research. This requires that applicants are either currently enrolled in or will have completed a three-year residency in an ACGME-accredited internal medicine training program within the United States. This fellowship leads to board eligibility in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and is designed to prepare fellows for successful academic careers.

Program Structure
The first 18 months of the fellowship are dedicated to clinical training, based at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) and the Baltimore VA Medical Center, with an elective month on the Pulmonary Consult Service at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, the world's largest clinical research complex. The last 18 months (with an option for a 4th year) are based at the NIH campus and are dedicated to research training. During the research phase, fellows will have access to practical experiences and educational resources at the NIH that will prepare them for careers in independent research. Fellows will also have an opportunity to pursue a Masters in Health Sciences degree either in clinical or basic science research training through the Duke-NIH Masters Program. Additional information about the clinical components of this Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at the University of Maryland are available at the UMMC website.

Research Opportunities in the NHLBI

Fellows will be trained in basic, translational or clinical research according to their interests under the direct supervision of NHLBI investigators. Information about research laboratories in the Critical Care Medicine and Pulmonary Branch of NHLBI can be found at the NHLBI website. Other laboratories in the NHLBI or other Institutes and Centers on the NIH campus in Bethesda may also be considered for fellow research training.
