The Critical Care Medicine Department (CCMD) is nationally known for its clinical excellence, for its research leadership, and for its training and mentoring of a generation of leaders in academic medicine. CCMD provides clinical care for NIH Clinical Center patients in need of life support and other intensive medical interventions and, thus, the department emphasizes clinical excellence, patient safety, multidisciplinary and interprofessional care, and a culture of service to support the mission of the NIH intramural clinical research program.
Fellowship and Medical Education
We sponsor a nationally recognized ACGME training program in Critical Care Medicine that attracts highly rated residents from internal medicine programs nationally who wish to train in critical care medicine, with many of our fellows also completing subspecialty training in pulmonary medicine, infectious diseases, or cardiology.
Clinical Services
The clinical services provided by Critical Care Medicine department staff include an intensive care unit, code team, critical care nurses and much more.
