Overview
This is an integrated two-year fellowship in Clinical Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology in the National Institutes of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) Intramural Research Program at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD. Both years are ACGME-accredited. Upon completion, fellows will be eligible for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Certification Examination in the sub-specialties of Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology. During this two-year program, fellows will receive comprehensive training in the evaluation and treatment of patients with epilepsy, as well as gaining experience and expertise in clinical research, equipping them to pursue academic careers in epilepsy. The focus of epilepsy research at NINDS is on developing new methods for evaluation and treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy, emphasizing neuroimaging approaches to study the relation between focal epilepsy and brain structure and function.
Program Structure
Fellows receive practical and didactic training in the outpatient and inpatient management of patients with epilepsy. They evaluate patients in the outpatient clinic, follow selected patients longitudinally, provide consultations to other services within the intramural program, and manage patients in the epilepsy monitoring unit, including non-invasive and invasive epilepsy evaluations. There is an active epilepsy surgery program, with exposure to advanced techniques and research in localization of epileptic foci and cognitive mapping, including structural and functional MRI, PET, magnetoencephalography (MEG), electrocorticography (ECoG) and direct cortical stimulation. There is also formal training in interpretation of EEG and evoked potentials. Fellows are expected to become involved in a research project. There is a well-developed didactic curriculum, including clinical neurophysiology and epilepsy lectures series, journal clubs, lab meetings, Clinical Neuroscience Grand Rounds, and Neurology Consult Rounds. The fellowship is affiliated with the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Children’s National Hospital, with rotations at these sites allowing for additional clinical exposure to a broad spectrum of patients.

This is an integrated two-year program in Clinical Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology. Fellows are interviewed for and accepted to both year-long positions concurrently. A third year is possible for selected candidates. Successful applicants must have completed an ACGME-accredited neurology residency program and have a valid, unrestricted U.S. license.
