Do You or a Loved One Have Sickle Cell Disease?
If you have been diagnosed with sickle cell disease, researchers at the NIH National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) in Bethesda, Maryland, are conducting an observational research study evaluating the effects of curative therapies on major organs including the heart, lung, kidneys, liver and brain. This study will also enroll patients with sickle cell disease who will not undergo curative therapies. Specialized studies to evaluate organ function will be performed during the first visit and two years later.
You can participate if you:
- Are 18 years old and older
- Have been diagnosed with moderate to severe sickle cell disease
- Have not had a prior transplant and are not currently on dialysis
What is involved:
- A review of medical history to determine eligibility for the study
- Evaluation of organ function, including MRI, blood tests, and kidney function tests
- Must be able to travel to the NIH Clinical Center
Compensation will be provided to study participants for time and travel. A physician referral is not required to participate.
