Do you or a loved one have sickle cell disease? Sickle cell disease interferes with the delivery of oxygen to tissues. In an observational study at the National Institutes of Health, doctors will look at the role of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) technologies as a monitoring tool in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). This test measures oxygen levels, blood flow, and the make-up of skin and muscle. Healthy participants with and without sickle cell trait will also be recruited to participate in baseline NIRS testing and serve as controls.
You can participate in this study if you:
- Are 18-90 years old
- Are diagnosed with sickle cell disease or sickle cell trait, or
- Are a healthy volunteer
What is involved:
- A review of medical history and lab work to determine eligibility for the study
- Participants will have NIRS, heart echo, and a 6-minute walk test to look at the heart-lung function
- Participation is over 2 weeks.
There is no cost for participation and compensation is provided.
