Dr. Sriram Gubbi recognized as the 2023 Distinguished Clinical Teacher

Dr. Sriram Gubbi

Dr. Sriram Gubbi, a staff clinician in the Metabolic Diseases Branch of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, received the NIH 2023 Distinguished Clinical Teacher Award (DCTA). The award is the highest teaching honor bestowed on an NIH senior investigator, staff clinician or tenure-track investigator.

The prize recognizes individuals who embody the ideal qualities of a mentor, teacher, clinician and researcher. Dr. Gubbi's research focuses on clinical and translational studies aimed at appropriate risk stratification and therapy improving morbidity and mortality of patients with thyroid disorders.

As this year's honoree, Gubbi was invited to give the 2023 John Laws Decker Memorial Lecture during a Clinical Center Grand Rounds event on June 7. Prior to his talk, Gubbi was presented with the Distinguished Clinical Teacher Award by Drs. Ejiofor Ezekwe and Meghan Yamasaki, co-chairs of the NIH Clinical Center's Clinical Fellows' Committee.

The pair quoted one clinical fellow, who described Gubbi as a stalwart and champion of teaching and mentorship at the NIH Clinical Center. "He is a steward of teaching pathologic mechanisms of disease to both fellows and clinicians. The care and attention he takes in going through features presented on [a] slide and correlating them with clinical presentations are unparalleled."

Last year's DCTA awardee, Dr. Jonathan M. Hernandez, an Investigator with the National Cancer Institute, presented the lecture entitled "The Development of Implementation of Ex Vivo Human Tumor Systems for Translational Science."
