Are You Between Age 18–40 Diagnosed With Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome?

Women diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) needed for a research study at the National Institutes of Health. Researchers want to learn more about how a medication may be used to help your body's insulin work better and if this can improve your overall metabolic health.

During the study you will:

  • Have a medical history and physical exam
  • Have four outpatient visits to include blood tests, EKG, and questionnaires
  • Have four separate inpatient visits at the NIH Clinical Center lasting four days each (over three months)
  • Have glucose tolerance tests, hyperinsulinemic tests, PET-CT scans, and liver ultrasounds
  • Take an FDA-approved medication and placebo tablet for four-weeks each
  • Receive compensation for your participation

You can participate if you:

  • Are a woman between 18-40 years
  • Have a body mass index (BMI) of 20-45 (calculate your BMI at https://go.usa.gov/x5My6)
  • Are taking oral contraceptives

You can NOT participate if you:

  • Have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, or a psychological condition
  • Have been pregnant, given birth, or have been breastfeeding in the last 12 months
  • Are allergic to mirabegron or a similar drug
  • Drink more than two drinks per day or smoke
  • Spend more than 70% of your daily hours outside

The NIH Clinical Center, America's research hospital is located in Bethesda, MD, in the Washington DC metro area on the Metro red line (Medical Center stop).
