Dr. Nicole Farmer is a tenure-track investigator within the Translational Biobehavioral and Health Disparities Branch.

BS, University of Maryland
MD, Howard University College of Medicine

Dr. Farmer received her BS in Molecular, Cellular Biology and Genetics from the University of Maryland at College Park, and her MD from Howard University College of Medicine. Prior to starting medical school, Dr. Farmer was a Post-baccalaureate Fellow within the Diabetes Branch of NIDDK. After medical school, she received her training in internal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia and then went on to start her academic career at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in the Division of General Internal Medicine. She has completed fellowship-level training in Integrative Medicine from the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona and Duke University Integrative Medicine.

Following several years of private practice, Dr. Farmer joined the NIH Clinical Center to do a post-doctoral fellowship in Health Behavior and Health Disparities Research. She then went on to serve as a Staff Scientist and is currently a Tenure-Track Investigator and Section Chief of the Dietary Behaviors and Biopsychosocial Health Section within the Translational Biobehavioral and Health Disparities Branch.

Dr. Farmer is also an adjunct Clinical Associate Professor at the George Washington School of Medicine and Public Health. In 2020, Dr. Farmer received the NIMHD William G. Coleman Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Innovation Award for her research on dietary-microbial metabolites and cardiovascular disease disparities. In 2021, she was named a Harvard-Macy Institute fellow for her work on incorporating humanities into culinary medicine education and dietary behavior research. In 2024, Dr. Farmer was named an NIH Intramural Research Distinguished Scholar. Dr. Farmer’s research focus may be categorized into three major areas:1) psychosocial outcomes of dietary behaviors, 2) biobehavioral interventions to address diet-related diseases, and 3) translational approaches to investigate metabolite and nutrient influences on diet-related disease pathophysiology.

In addition to her research, Dr. Farmer is passionate about advancing diversity in the scientific and clinical workforce through mentoring and working with programs that introduce science and medicine to underrepresented students.
