Dr. Leonard N. Chen oversees blood collection for transfusion support, cellular therapy products and other experimental therapeutics and research.

Dr. Chen is a board-certified clinical pathologist and transfusion medicine specialist with a research background in immunogenetics. He is a Staff Clinician in Blood Services Section (BSS), Department of Transfusion Medicine (DTM), Clinical Center. He is the Program Director of the NIH Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine Fellowship.

He received MD degree from Taipei Medical University in Taiwan. Having decided to become a physician-scientist, he went to Georgetown University Medical Center (Washington, DC) to study immunogenetics on multiple sclerosis. After obtaining his PhD in immunology, he continued his research in T-cell activation and antigen recognition as a postdoctoral fellow before transitioning to be a physician-scientist in the department of radiation oncology at Georgetown University Hospital where he conducted several basic and translational research projects as well as undertook several clinical trials in cancer research.

During his residency at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, he developed interest in transfusion medicine. He published a review on serological weak-D phenotypes and several articles stemmed from his clinical research and case reports. His research on G-CSF stimulated HPC/A donors during his transfusion medicine fellowship at NIH DTM won the 2020 AABB Future Leader Fellow Award.

His research interests including therapeutic apheresis, cell-based immunotherapy, transfusion transmitted diseases, blood group antigens and molecular genetics.
