Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility at the Clinical Center

The Clinical Center is dependent on a diverse workforce with a culture of teamwork and collaboration. The hospital has developed a comprehensive program to combat racism and reduce disparities across our workforce. Our efforts are focused on promoting diversity and inclusion by reducing disparities, promoting inclusivity and equity, and lifelong learning.

Importantly, one of the many benefits of this program is it also supports our emphasis on providing culturally sensitive care for our patients. The Clinical Center provided a video to staff announcing the launch of the program.

The Clinical Center is committed to transparency in addressing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA). Workforce demographics specifically of Clinical Center government employees are available on the NIH Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion's Workforce Demographics webpage.

Our Mission and Vision

The DEIA program's mission is to create, promote and sustain an organizational culture that advances DEIA at all levels of the hospital.

The vision of our program is to highlight and ensure that the hospital is proactive in reducing disparities across its workforce, especially in leadership positions.

DEIA Core Competency

NIH Clinical Center core competencies are a set of knowledge, skills, and abilities that everyone who works in the Clinical Center is expected to demonstrate on a daily basis.

The competencies:

  • Promotes and sustains an organizational culture that advances diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility throughout the organization.
  • Demonstrates a continuous commitment to eradicating all forms of discrimination and accepting and respecting the unique experiences, perspectives and viewpoints of all those who serve the Clinical Center.
  • Encourages collaboration, flexibility and the creation of a fair, just and accessible environment for our staff, customers and stakeholders, where interactions with patients, family members and across the interdisciplinary team reflect cultural competence.
  • Communicates and coordinates with Clinical Center leaders in support of identifying, analyzing and making recommendations on current processes and accepted behaviors that contribute to structural racism.

Clinical Center DEIA Committee

A critical piece of the Clinical Center DEIA strategy is the establishment of a standing committee that is made up of a wide range of members from various disciplines, career levels, and backgrounds. The committee has also instituted departmental DEIA liaisons as part of the DEIA Advisory Council.
