The Clinical Center hosted its seventh annual NIH Family Caregiver Day Nov. 14, recognizing the critical role of family caregivers and encouraging them to take care of themselves. At the Clinical Center, family members and friends who provide emotional and physical patient support are essential components of the clinical research team. According to the National Alliance for Caregiving, nearly 44 million family caregivers in the U.S. – nearly 20% of the U.S. adult population – provide important societal and financial contributions toward maintaining the well-being of those they care for. Through national surveys, our research identifies important new trends and sheds light on the varying needs of this huge and diverse group. Caregivers often maintain home responsibilities in addition to being at the bedside of their loved one. For outpatients, they may administer medications, drive their loved ones to and from medical appointments, and help coordinate their care.
