Biosketch

Patricia (Tricia) Coffey is the Chief Health Information Officer at the NIH Clinical Center where she has been very passionate about all aspects of health information management. Tricia has been a part of the Clinical Center team since 1990 where she has worked in various management level positions within the department. During her tenure as an HIM professional, she led several enterprise-wide initiatives including the organization’s extensive transition from a paper medical record to an entirely electronic medical record along with several other critical initiatives including the implementation of patient and referring clinician portals as well as development of a telehealth program.

Under her leadership, the department was awarded honorable mention for the AHIMA Grace Award in 2017 and the AHIMA Grace Award for 2021. Ms. Coffey was also awarded the Innovation Triumph Award from AHIMA in 2019. She values the importance of working collaboratively with partners in information technology to accomplish goals and focus on advancing the use of technology in support of process improvement, patient engagement, and patient safety. She also values the importance of health information management professionals forming and maintaining strategic partnerships across organizations in support of these critical goals. She thrives on being a part of the exciting conversations that are shaping the future of the healthcare system, listening and learning from others, and positioning health information management professionals in varied roles across organizations to ensure high quality healthcare services.

Ms. Coffey also values the importance of mentoring and guiding HIM students and new professionals to the field. In her tenure in the HIM field, she has established and worked through many student affiliation contract agreements with local colleges and universities across the United States. She is a past Director and Past President of the Maryland Health Information Management Association.
